Student ID
You can put any integer number here to generate different exercises for practice. However you must submit the activity associated with your ID number to D2L in order to receive credit for the activity.
Basic File Permissions
- Take a screenshot of these instructions (including your student number) and the file/folder structure below. If you cannot get everything into the screenshot it is okay, just take your ID number and whatever fits on the screen.
- (If you have the accounts and zip file from previous exercise, you can skip this step). Create two user accounts named 'X' and 'Y'. The details like name, phone number, etc. are not important and you can use any simple to remember passwords. When you have both accounts created, open two sessions to your machine logging in as both people. In the user account 'X', transfer the file http://sit.cna-qatar.edu.qa/cr2510/datafiles/dist1.zip to this person's home folder and extract the contents. This will produce a folder called 'dist'.
- Create a folder named a31octal in "X's" home folder and copy the files in the next step's table into this new folder.
-
Using the octal notation of permissions format, change the permission
of the files to match the table below.
Filename Permissions - When you are finished, use a directory listing on the a31octal folder to show that the permissions have been set. Take a screenshot of this. If you do not show the permissions, we cannot give you credit for completing the exercise.
- Run the history command but filter it through grep so that only the 6 commands used to set the permissions are shown. When you have the correct commands showing, take a screenshot of the output and include the command that you used to obtain it.
- Do not clean up these user accounts yet. They will be used for the next activity.
Submission of Work
The daily exercises in this course are based on proving that you have successfully completed the tasks. This is done by determining which command(s) are necessary and collecting a screenshot of the completed work.
For each day, you will submit a PDF file to D2L by 11:30pm. The format MUST BE PDF! Submitting work in any other format will result in a zero. The dropbox closes promptly at 11:30pm and no late submissions by email will be accepted. No special arrangements will be made for any reason. A small number of daily activities will excused at the end of the semester to handle various problems that might arise.
Questions/parts must be clearly labelled. Work submitted without labels will not receive full marks.
